De beers family biography for kids pictures

This particular wagon train was travelling from the British controlled colony in the Cape to the South Eastern Transvaal. While camped on land belonging to a friendly farmer in the Orange Free State, the children noticed that a calf they had grown fond of was not with the herd. Because the calf was so loved by the children of the wagon train, the entire camp went in search of the missing calf.

Rachel, or Racheltjie as she was known, and her young brother joined the search party. In their youthful exuberance Racheltjie and her brother got separated from the search party. It was only at dusk when snow started falling that Rachel realised that she and her brother were lost. They desperately went in search of the wagon train but to no avail.

Slowly, but surely, the wind picked up. With snow blinding her eyes and with hands, nose and face freezing cold Racheltjie found a large ant nest that had been hollowed out by an aardvark. Realizing that they were in a life or death situation Racheltjie de Beer told her little brother to climb into the hollowed out ant hill. Racheltjie then lay in front of the opening to keep the wind off her brother.

Later that night Racheltjie realised that her efforts at keeping her brother alive were failing.
